Interim Fire Chief Rick Kolomay, Carol Stream Fire Protection District and Chief Robert Hoff, Chicago Fire Department

"Real-Time Company and Command Officer Focus and Leadership" Workshop

The goal of this session is to motivate and provoke firefighters, company officers, and chief officers attending to change (at least) one method in how they operate and/or lead their personnel. The majority of our members give 100% to accomplish our mission. But we must work on the few who do not and also remember to NEVER become complacent. OUR JOB IS A TEAM EFFORT, and so is this class!

Areas to be discussed using actual incidents and situations: Complacency. Mission and Focus. Critical thought and decision-making in and out of the field. Roll Call, Having a "Game Plan," Coordinated fire attack. Training and drilling / Repetition is the mother of ALL skill! Comments, thoughts, and questions will be encouraged throughout the session!

"RED FLAGS: Keeping us Safe; Surviving on the Fire-Ground"

Many fine programs are presented today to show us how to get out of trouble on the fire-ground. This program will help us stay out of trouble and avoid the things that are injuring and killing firefighters today. During the program, find out what is a “red flag” that should signal us as firefighters, company officers and incident commanders to threats that must be averted. Learn what our personal “red flags” are, that we all must address ourselves to stay safe on the fire-ground. Stay ahead of trouble and keep your troops out of trouble, so we can all stay alive and safe.

John Ceriello, FDNY

"Strategy and Tactics of Wind Drived Fires in High Rise Buildings"

Lt. Ceriello will present a complete overview of the FDNY’s Wind Driven Fires Project. It will take the student from the inception, through the live fire research, and ending with how the information learned will be implemented on the street. This research brought together some of the most powerful institutions in the fire research world. The National Institute of Standards and Technologies, New York University’s Poly Tech of Brooklyn, and FDNY’s Research and Development all came together to investigate what was happening to civilians and firefighters when wind is a factor in high rise residential buildings.

Captain Jake Pelk, Central County Fire Department

"Thermal Imaging Operations"

Thermal Imagers are one of the most innovative advancements the fire service has seen in recent history.  Unfortunately, most fire departments put them on the apparatus with little to no training.  This program is designed to help develop an understanding of how to use TIC's to make proactive decisions on the fireground.  We will discuss the uses of TIC's and the ways to enhance safety and effectiveness of operations.

"Worcester 10 Years Later"

Worcester 10 Years Later is a comprehensive look at the organizational transformation of the Worcester Fire Department following the tragic line-of-duty deaths of six firefighters in 1999. District Chief John Sullivan contrasts the recommendations made by the department’s own internal review board and those made by NIOSH and then illustrates the training initiatives and institutional changes made following the incident. The lessons learned from this devastating incident and subsequent national safety initiatives are changing the modern fire service into a culture of firefighter safety and survival. This program will challenge the assumptions of tradition and promote a vision for the future.
